Executive summary: In order to assess the role of BRICS on the international stage, both in its present situation and in its future prospects, it is essential to refer to correct and relevant conceptual elements. Too often, in the dominant discourse, particularly widespread following the recent transformation of BRICS into BRICS Plus with the accession of new Member States, analysts and commentators rely on inappropriate, superficial, distorting or even erroneous knowledge. The author proposes remedial action in this regard, which should involve the scientific community as a matter of priority, in order to define conceptual frameworks for a shared understanding of the scope and implications of major structural changes taking place on a global scale. This step is considered essential for a correct reading and interpretation of the role of BRICS Plus in the reform of key international institutions, such as the UN, and thus of the global multilateral order. In this regard, the author recalls and illustrates both the formal commitments made by BRICS in the final declarations of their summits, as well as the importance of the common platforms approved at the UN and on which BRICS work constructively.

The author proposes a corrective approach in this regard, which should primarily involve the scientific community, with the like of defining conceptual frameworks that allow for a shared understanding of the scope and implications of the major structural transformations currently underway at the global level. This step is considered essential for a correct reading and interpretation of the role of BRICS Plus in the reform of key international institutions, such as the United Nations, and therefore of the global multilateral order. In this respect, the author recalls and illustrates both the commits officially undertaken by BRICS in the final statements of their Summits, as well as the importance of the common platforms approved at the UN and on which the BRICS operates in a constructive manner.
