Executive Summary: Understanding the conflict situation in the Middle East and, more specifically, the territory corresponding to Palestine under the mandate of the United Kingdom from 1920 to 1948, presupposes first of all the question of why there is a recognized State – Israel – which covers part of that territory and why only one. This requires clarification of the historical factors explaining this situation. As for the prospects for peace rightly desired by many chanceries, they are limited to the often advanced objective of a two-State solution sharing the territories between the Jordan Valley and the Mediterranean Sea. But given the historical gravity, geographical realities and the actions of geopolitical actors, is this often reiterated objective a possible future or an outdated rhetoric?
