THE DISPUTE OVER THE RELIGIOUS HERITAGE OF “NAGORNO-KARABAKH”, between biased Caucasian historiographies and western prejudices

Abstract: Armenia and Azerbaijan dispute the ownership of several Christian religious buildings in the former region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Numerous and lively exchanges of declarations between the two countries followed one another in 2022, which resulted in a resolution of the European Parliament against Azerbaijan on 9 March of the same year. Indeed, Azerbaijani claims are based on their heritage from the former Zoroastrian and then Christian Albania of the Caucasus. Some historical clarifications relating to this heritage dispute are necessary to better understand the nationalist representations at play in these two South Caucasian countries.
