Résumé: À l’entrée dans le monde moderne et sous le règne de Charles Quint, l’Espagne adopte la devise « Plus ultra » (plus loin) qui figure encore sur le drapeau espagnol. Ce sera le moteur de la construction du monde atlantique. En dépassant le détroit de Gibraltar puis le détroit de Magellan, les Européens font passer la civilisation du monde méditerranéen à un monde d’hégémonie atlantique d’abord dominé par les Espagnols et les Portugais, avant l’entrée en scène des Néerlandais, des Anglais et des Français. La devise « Plus ultra » justifiera la conquête de territoires et la construction d’empires coloniaux, et implique surtout un projet radical pour transformer la condition humaine, d’abord limité aux élites et qui finira par concerner chaque être humain dans son quotidien. Les révolutions violentes se succédèrent, présentées comme le seul moyen de dépassement vers des temps meilleurs. Cette vision a triomphé après 1945 et plus encore après la guerre froide, et le monde atlantique semblait alors vainqueur sur toute la ligne. Mais depuis quelques décennies, la remise en cause est totale, elle vient du reste du monde, mais aussi d’un doute profond qui mine la culture occidentale, le projet de modifier la condi – tion humaine pouvant se transformer en cauchemar détruisant la sensibilité et l’imaginaire de l’Homo Atlanticus, qui constituaient son ascendant. Une guerre culturelle fracture l’unité du monde atlantique : faut-il se lancer dans de nouvelles annexions et conquêtes, ou plutôt se concentrer sur une nouvelle Réforme et une nouvelle Renaissance ?

The motto “Plus Ultra” would justify the conquest of territories and the construction of colonial empires, and above all implied a radical project to transform the human condition, initially limited to the elites and eventually affecting every human being in their daily lives. Violent revolutions followed one after another, presented as the only way to move forward to better times. This vision triumphed after 1945 and even more so after the Cold War, and the Atlantic world then seemed to have won all the way. But for several decades now, the questioning has been total, coming from the rest of the world, but also from a profound doubt that undermines Western culture, the project of modifying the human condition being able to transform into a nightmare destroying the sensitivity and the imagination of Homo Atlanticus, which constituted its ascendancy. A cultural war fractures the unity of the Atlantic world: should we embark on new annexations and conquests, or rather concentrate on a new Reformation and a new Renaissance?
